City of Nedlands Central Irrigation Control Project

Nedlands, WA

The City of Nedlands required an internet-based, centralised system for monitoring irrigation and lighting within the municipality. They needed to convert three existing controllers in parks to mobile phone-based internet access and subsequently extend the system to more sites.

Waterman Irrigation – a division of Industrial Automation Group in WA – was chosen to provide a system for all the city’s seven parks. The major challenges of the project were the integration of the ADSL router into the city’s existing IT system, and the challenge of providing a reliable mobile phone.

The project took six weeks to implement. The outcome was a centralised irrigation control that is non-location specific using the web interface. This is read using a handheld remote control with instantaneous feedback on the condition of the system. Water, labour and energy savings are gained through the use of these advanced remote controls, and an SMS alarm function prevents water wastage.
