The need to boost skills as manufacturing jobs were shed was cited by the Victorian government as it announced increases to funding for training and education.
The Australian reports that the Coalition government announced $1.2 billion in funding for vocational training, on top of a $30 million training package for retraining automotive supplier workers.
Last month a leaked auditor general’s assessment found half of the state’s 14 TAFEs were operating in deficit.
"This significant investment provides support and access to training for people to develop the skills needed to take advantage of new opportunities emerging in the economy," Minister for Higher Education and Skills Nick Wakeling told AAP.
