A survey from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and BDO
has found that manufacturers were more likely to support the Conservative party
than Labour or the Liberal Democrats.
AAP reports that 40 per cent of 1,000 manufacturers surveyed
had the most faith in the Tories’s policies. 28 per cent, the next biggest
group, believed no party had the answers. After this was 5 per cent favouring
Labour and 3 per cent the Liberal Democrats.
“A strong manufacturing base is crucial to building a resilient UK economy and it shows that government policies to introduce competitive corporate tax rates, cut red tape and encourage R&D, are working,” said Patrick Kniveton from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in a statement.
The annual survey, titled Engineered in Britain: Manufacturing A Successful economy? also
included 1,000 members of the general public.
Results were “broadly positive” The Engineer reports.
When asked about whether or not the current Tory-led
government’s policies were positive for the industry, 41 per cent of
manufacturers and 34 per cent of the public agreed that it was (an improvement on 26 per cent and 19 per cent last year).
Other findings to come out included a prediction by
manufacturer respondents that the highest growth would be experienced in
composites, followed by biomedical, then construction, then aerospace.
