TAFE SA and SAGE Automation unveil instrumentation training to bridge skills gap

TAFE SA and SAGE have developed an instrumentation training course which will open new career pathways for students by providing first-hand experience of technology currently in use across growth industry sectors from defence to mining and advanced manufacturing.

“SAGE Automation is delighted to have formed a partnership with TAFE SA to deliver the exact skills industry is crying out for,” said Andrew Downs, Managing Director of SAGE Automation.

“South Australian industry is under increasing pressure from global competitors so we must continually look at ways to work better and smarter.

“Ensuring our workforce is appropriately skilled to meet the current and future challenges facing industry is a critical first step. Electrical instrumentation skills are highly sought after, yet not readily available. SAGE Automation and TAFE SA are working together to change that.

“Participants of this Certificate IV in electrical instrumentation course will be able to hone their skills on the current industrial training equipment used by leading international companies.”

Specialist instrumentation training equipment built by SAGE Automation will provide students with a strong industry relevant learning experience in areas including automation and PLC programming.

Tonsley TAFE Director Alison Roberts said the partnership with SAGE Automation marks a new era for TAFE SA as it forges closer links with industry and employers and responds to their needs by offering specialist courses to meet industry skills gaps.

“These partnerships will become a hallmark of the new Tonsley TAFE,” said Roberts. “The Certificate IV in electrical instrumentation course is an ideal opportunity for qualified electricians and apprentices to go to the next level in their career development.

“For employers it's also an opportunity to up-skill and retain key staff for the benefit of the individual and the business.”

The Certificate IV in electrical instrumentation course will be run at the new Tonsley TAFE.

The Certificate IV in Electrical – Instrumentation provides competencies to select, install, commission, fault find and maintain electrical and instrumentation equipment in buildings and premises and instrumentation systems and core instrumentation equipment for process and control. It includes ERAC requirements for an Electrician’s Licence.

The course is provided in evening classes or via block attendances with principles of measurement, practical experiments, demonstrations and examinations of knowledge at both SAGE at Melrose Park and at the TAFE SA Regency Campus and Tonsley TAFE depending on the resources needed.
