A helical bevel gearbox package from NORD Drivesystems was installed at
a leading New Zealand-based meat processing plant that sought to reduce
downtime and running costs within their facility.
The Alliance Group decided to upgrade their carton conveyors located at
their Dannevirke, Hawkes Bay meat processing plant. Seeking to upgrade to
modern, reliable and more efficient technologies for their conveyor systems, Alliance
turned to their power transmission supplier, Russet Engineering Supplies to
recommend and supply an advanced geared motor drive package. The new solution
also needed to address the issue of overheating in the existing worm geared motors
even in the cold ambient temperature of 7°C inside the boning room, resulting
in a very short service life of up to six months.
Alliance engineer Dennis Rodgers wanted the new geared motor package to
offer increased reliability, and an extended service life in addition to the
ability to withstand their aggressive washdown environment.
Russet Engineering Supplies turned to major gear manufacturer NORD
Drivesystems, who in turn recommended the new NORD 2 stage helical bevel
gearbox complete with the new NORD HM series smooth exterior electric motor.
Feature highlights of the NORD 2 stage helical bevel gearbox include an
industry leading design incorporating oversized bearings to deliver high overhung
output shaft load capacity, extending the reliability and service life of the
geared motor; 97% efficiency enhancing the drive package’s capacity to transmit
maximum torque with minimum demand to electric motor power; and high material specification,
high tolerance manufacture, and heat treatments ensuring market-leading lifespan.
The new NORD HM series electric motors feature a smooth exterior surface
with no cooling fins. Features also include all exterior surfaces sloped to
facilitate flow of water and wash down off the surface; MEPS2 compliance
(AS/NZS1359.5); and rated for S1 continuous duty.
A major advantage of the NORD geared motor assembly solution was that
the entire package was coated with NORD’s Severe Duty Extreme Stainless Steel
coating system (NSD), recommended for hygienic and food applications including
washdown with aggressive chemicals. Formulated to set extremely hard, the NSD
coating offers particular resistance to aggressive cleaning chemicals such as
Sulphuric Acid, Hydrochloric Acid, and Caustic Soda, making it ideal for the meat
processing industry.
NORD’s two-year factory warranty was an additional factor that
influenced Alliance’s buying decision.
