Technology has been developed to remove carbon emissions from gassy coal mines.
Created by Hunter Valley based company Corky, the technology reportedly has the potential to reduce Australia’s carbon emissions by 10% by 2010, according to the Newcastle Herald.
Known as the ‘ventilation air methane regenerative after burner’, it will be tested as Centennial Coal’s Mandalong coal mine, which is recognised as a particularly gassy mine and emits around one million tonnes of carbon annually.
It is designed to capture the methane and burn it, then release the heat.
The NSW Government is contributing $2.2 million towards the project via the NSW Clean Coal Fund, with Centennial providing an additional $600 000.
