New skills and training minister appointed

Prime minister Anthony Albanese has appointed Andrew Giles MP as the new skills and training minister, succeeding Brendan O’Connor in what is a major ministry reshuffle.

The prime minister will recommend to the governor-general that the new ministry members be sworn in today, 29 July.

This change is part of a broader cabinet arrangement aimed at leveraging the depth and strength of the parliamentary labor party to continue delivering better outcomes and opportunities for all Australians.

This reshuffle follows the decision of three colleagues to step down, creating opportunities for new voices to take on key roles.

Prime minister Albanese paid tribute to Carol Brown, Brendan O’Connor, and Linda Burney for their outstanding contributions to the government and the nation.

Acknowledging their decades of public service, he respected their decision to retire at the next election.

Albanese said that building on their progress requires elevating new voices, and the announced changes ensure stability and certainty moving forward.
