Developed by NECA’s Victorian Chapter, with support from Sustainability Victoria, the program offers electricians the chance to become EcoSmart Electricians.
After successfully completing four specially-designed modules, electricians will be able to apply for EcoSmart Electricians accreditation, enabling them to promote their additional skills and add value to the services they offer to their customers.
According to the organisers, offering ‘green’ products and services is increasingly-important in all levels of electronics and electricity. The key elements driving consumer demand for these types of products are Government-funded initiatives which stimulate consumer awareness and demand, and financial incentives for customers to invest in energy saving products and technologies, along with general consumer concern for the environment.
In addition, new energy efficiency measures for commercial and public buildings were introduced into the Building Code of Australia with effect from 1 May 2006, which has heightened demand for such services.
This had led to growing opportunities for contractors to encourage energy efficient installations as they are regularly maintaining, repairing and upgrading installations in domestic, commercial and industrial premises.
The course has been developed with industry support, with the training program and course materials trialed in a successful pilot program which in May 2007 in Victoria and New South Wales, involving 38 volunteer electricians.
The EcoSmart Electricians training course will be run in all states, through NECA State Chapters. It is anticipated that more than 1700 electricians will be trained by the end of 2009 and approximately 3700 by the end of 2010.
The training is available on the National Training Information Service for any Registered Training Organisation (RTO) to offer.
