The National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA) has announced its support of Safe Work Australia’s draft Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation, which seeks to achieve harmonisation of OHS laws in Australia.
The new legislation incorporates many of NECA’s own recommendations to the National OHS Review Panel.
The draft model legislation could soon become an OHS Act, with model regulations and model codes of practice to be adopted around Australia.
NECA national chief executive officer, James Tinslay, said, “We believe balanced and fair OHS legislation that creates uniformity of requirements across Australia will bring enormous economic benefit to industry and to the Australian community. For this reason, we have welcomed the opportunity to provide comment on the exposure draft on behalf of our members.”
“We recognise our members’ business practices and technologies are changing and even small contractors are finding opportunities to work in bordering states and territories. Legislative uniformity for OHS will greatly assist in the development of the industry in this area.”
