The new Alex 500 from Anton Paar is a new alcohol and extract meter for
beer designed to put craft brewers in control of their entire production
process. A partner to the brewing industry for several decades, the Austrian
high-precision measuring instruments manufacturer is the
world’s leading provider of alcohol and density measurement solutions.
Freeing up craft brewers from the need to approach external laboratories,
the new Alex 500 is a reliable lab grade analyser with the ability to determine
a beer product’s alcohol and extract content, calories and degree of
fermentation among many more parameters. Craft brewers can use the Alex 500 to easily
monitor their entire production from fermentation to quality control of the
bottled beer.
Anton Paar’s latest innovation, the Alex 500 alcohol and extract meter
is based on a patented combination of technologies, conducting absorption
measurement via NIR spectroscopy and density measurement based on the
oscillating U-tube technology.
Designed as a compact, easily operated instrument, Alex 500 can be used
in two modes: In the fermentation monitor mode, it directly displays a
fermentation curve, assigned to a tank via sample ID. In the final production
stages, Alex 500 can be switched to its standard mode to determine a beer’s
alcohol content, original or real extract content and many other beer
parameters such as calories or degree of fermentation with lab grade accuracy.
Measuring alcohol content with an accuracy of 0.2% v/v and determining
density with an accuracy of 0.001 g/cm³, Alex 500 offers craft brewers the
assurance that their beer’s taste and quality are always stable, pint for pint.
By allowing brewers to handle the entire measurement procedure themselves, the
new alcohol and extract meter facilitates immediate correction of any undesired
deviations in production.
Alex 500’s speed of measurement sets it apart from the glass hydrometers
still commonly found in smaller breweries. Alex 500 covers the entire beer
measuring range, providing brewers with direct, real-time results, without any
need for a separate calculation or distillation.
