The 49th International Conference on Infrared, Millimetre and Terahertz Waves has been secured for 2024 in Perth, discussing radio and infrared frequencies for use in space science, nuclear fusion and biology fields.

This will be the first time the event has been held in Australia in 12 years.

The conference will bring together some of the world’s top international researchers to discuss the evolution of ultra-high frequencies being used in areas such as health, environmental science and telecommunication.

“Research developments in this field have potential applications to sectors such as space science, medical research and communications,” WA Science minister Roger Cook said.

“We look forward to hosting more than 600 conference delegates in Perth, including international researchers from around the world.”

The six-day conference is the largest of its kind and is expected to inject more than $3 million into the Western Australian economy.

“The six-day conference is an opportunity for local researchers to exchange scientific and technical knowledge, and to showcase research being conducted here in Western Australia,” Cook said.

The Western Australian government, through Tourism WA, provides funding to Business Events Perth (BE Perth) to attract outstanding conferences and strengthen WA’s reputation as a desirable destination for business events.

“I’m excited to welcome this event to WA in 2024,” WA Tourism minister David Templeman said.

“Through Tourism WA, we’re proud to support Business Events Perth to attract delegates to our state through events such as the International Conference on Infrared, Millimetre and Terahertz Waves.”

In 2020-21, BE Perth secured 67 national and international business events set to occur in WA up to 2024, which will boost the state’s economy by over $54 million.

“This international event will be a great chance for attendees from across the world to discover the wonderful offerings of Perth and I encourage everyone to stay longer and explore regional WA,” Templeman said.

BE Perth has directly supported the staging of 190 local business events, connecting more than 82,000 delegates across the state, assisting industry recovery and local jobs.
