Honeywell to provide engineering and project management for Vietnamese offshore platform

Honeywell Process Solutions (HPS) will handle critical project management and engineering for yet another oil and natural gas platform that will tap energy reserves off the coast of Vietnam.

Operated by Hoang Long Joint Operating Co. (HLJOC), the TGT-H5 wellhead platform located in the Te Giac Trang (TGT) Field off the southern coast of Vietnam is the third platform where HPS will serve as the main contractor and provide control and safety solutions. HPS had provided its specialist services for HLJOC’s two other platforms that are currently operating in the TGT Field.

In addition to turnkey project management and engineering of the new platform’s topside structures, HPS will install an integrated Honeywell control and safety solution including a new fire and gas system to improve automation, increase cyber and physical security, and enhance operator effectiveness.

TGT-H5 plans to begin production in the fourth quarter of 2015 with HLJOC expected to achieve a total production of about 50,000 barrels of crude oil per day from the three platforms.

According to Joe Spirito, vice president of Asia Pacific Sales for HPS, the decision to award a third project following the first two platforms, is a reflection of HLJOC’s confidence in Honeywell’s technology, experience and performance.

Dr. Cu Xuan Bao, General Manager for HLJOC commented that Honeywell was selected not only for its technology but also for the experience and commitment that the Honeywell team brought to the TGT-H5 project. The decision was also based on HLJOC’s highly positive experience working with Honeywell on two previous wellhead platform projects, TGT-H1 and TGT-H4, both of which were completed on time and on budget.

The scope of the new contract includes engineering management and integration with the two existing TGT platforms, the floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel that processes the hydrocarbons produced by the platforms, and remote monitoring from the HLJOC office in Ho Chi Minh City. Specific technology to be used on the H5 platform includes Experion PKS, C300 Controller, and Safety Manager.

Honeywell has played a major role in developing Vietnam’s energy infrastructure for more than a decade primarily through its HPS and UOP businesses. In addition to the offshore TGT platforms, Honeywell technologies including Experion Process Knowledge System and UOP’s processes such as CCR Platforming and Penex, are being used in the Dung Quat Refinery and the Nghi Son Refinery now under construction. Honeywell has also established training programs for Vietnam’s workforce including an Automation College in Hanoi and a career development program with PetroVietnam to help build and sustain a strong talent pool to support the projected growth in the process and refining industries in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.
