The federal Department of Industry, Innovation and Science is soliciting feedback and comments as part of its review of the safety regime for offshore oil and gas workers in Commonwealth waters.
The Department’s discussion paper can be accessed on its online Consultation Hub, with comments to be submitted before 23 July.
The discussion paper provides an overview of the offshore safety legislation and raises issues for public comment. Submissions will help develop a policy framework.
The review is part of the Department’s regulatory improvement process that aims to ensure the current OHS safety regime continues to provide an effective, leading-practice framework for securing the health, safety and welfare of workers. It anticipates the sunsetting of the current offshore safety regulations, the Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage (Safety) Regulations 2009, in 2020.
The review may reportedly result in proposed policy changes and legislative amendments, where necessary, to improve the safety regime.
