Downer wins Whitehaven Coal Maules Creek CHPP construction contract

Whitehaven Coal has awarded Downer EDI the contract to construct the Maules Creek mine coal handling and processing plant (CHPP).

The contract is one of the largest single pieces of work for the $767 million Maules Creek mine project, and itself is valued at around $100 million.

As part of the contract Downer will erect the CHPP, construct all the structures, buildings, mechanical, and electrical and instrumentation services for the 1600 tph plant.

Downer’s CEO Grant Fenn said “Downer is an Australian leader in CHPP design and construction and this project will be delivered by our experienced infrastructure team, including its specialist coal consultancy QCC Resources”.

It is one of the largest major contracts for the embattled mine, and puts it on track to begin first coal sales in just over a year.

Commenting on the award, Whitehaven’s managing director Paul Flynn said “we are pleased to be awarding this contract to Downer EDI who are very experienced in this area and will be able to deliver this vital piece of infrastructure for the Maules Creek project”.

“Overall construction of the project is progressing to schedule with a number of high quality contractors engaged and actively working on building the project for Whitehaven.”
