CSIRO appointment for innovation

The Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research has appointed Professor Ian Chubb AC as a part-time member of the CSIRO Board.

Welcoming Professor Chubb to the board, Senator Carr said his experience and expertise in the higher education and research sectors will be of great value to the CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency.

“Professor Chubb’s proficiency as a policy advisor to the Australian Government and his broad experience on a variety of peak bodies and committees will complement the existing skills and expertise of the CSIRO Board,” Senator Carr said.

“Collaborative initiatives with the university sector are an important factor in enabling CSIRO to make the most effective contribution to the Australian innovation system. Professor Chubb has a full appreciation of this collaborative interface and will contribute this expertise to the board.”

Professor Chubb is the Vice Chancellor of the Australian National University and the Chair of the International Alliance of Research Universities.

His career includes six years as Vice-Chancellor of Flinders University and senior executive appointments at Monash University and the University of Wollongong.

Professor Chubb’s contribution to the development and implementation of higher education policy was recognised in June 1999 when he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia.

In April 2003 he was awarded the Centenary Medal for service to Australian society through tertiary education and university administration and in June 2006, Professor Chubb was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia for service to higher education including research and development policy.
