Crystal Engineering, a unit of AMETEK Sensors, Test & Calibration has added an automatic calibration reminder system to its XP2i pressure gauge. The new system reduces the possibility of using gauges after their calibration dates and potentially incurring regulatory fines.

Manual record-keeping and notifications are replaced by customisable on-screen alerts prior to the due date, warning alerts on and after the due date, and an optional capability to lock the gauge from use after its calibration due date. Dates, reminders and message types are set by supervisors through free software.

Because they measure critical performance metrics of a wide range of equipment, properly calibrated pressure gauges can be important factors in worker safety, pollution control and/or product quality.

The rugged, intrinsically safe XP2i gauge offers high-accuracy pressure recording in the harshest environments, from offshore to desert to the Arctic. Key features include an IP-67 rated, marine-grade enclosure, a fast pressure safety valve (PSV) mode, custom engineering units, and a leak-free pressure fitting connection.

Active Digital Temperature Compensation corrects the sensor for changes in temperature. It is guaranteed to 0.1 per cent of reading accuracy from -10 to 50° C. Every XP2i comes with an ISO 17025 calibration report – NIST-traceable, A2LA accredited, internationally recognized by ILAC–with test data at five temperatures.

Its high contract liquid crystal display is readable in all conditions from bright sunlight to dark (with included backlight).

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) today announced an Australian-first trial of drinking water systems that produce clean drinking water drawn directly from the air using solar power.

On behalf of the Australian Government, ARENA will provide $420,000 in funding to US-based Zero Mass Water to deploy 150 of its solar-powered SOURCE drinking water systems across multiple locations in Australia.

The $821,500 total project will demonstrate the technology not yet seen in Australia – a product that produces clean, renewable, infrastructure-free drinking water extracted from the air using solar energy.

The SOURCE hydropanels are infrastructure free with no external electricity or water required for operation. Instead of filtering or distributing mains water, SOURCE produces pure water by harnessing the power of the sun and the moisture in the air.

SOURCE hydropanels can produce up to 5 litres of clean drinking water on a typical day, depending on the climate.

Each SOURCE hydropanel produces enough water to displace over 20,000 plastic water bottles over 15 years.

Under the trial, SOURCE will be rolled out in 150 sites across Australia including Sydney, Adelaide, Perth as well as regional towns and remote communities. The pilot will trial SOURCE in a variety of locations including airports, cafes, community centres, commercial buildings and sustainable properties.

The project will reduce the reliance on plastic bottled water while also provide accessible clean drinking water to rural communities with limited access to clean drinking water or electricity, or during droughts.

The pilot phase of the project will also incorporate a third party study to evaluate the environmental impacts of bottled water in Australia.

ARENA CEO Ivor Frischknecht said the SOURCE panels were a unique way of accelerating solar PV innovation in Australia.

“Zero Mass Water’s project will create a product that offers a new application and market opportunity for the solar industry in Australia. Using a combination of solar PV with solar thermal technology, SOURCE’s ability to create clean drinking water could be utilised to achieve positive solutions around water supply,” Mr Frischknecht said.

“The potential benefits of this technology to the environment are important. This pilot project can produce reliable drought-resistant water sources to remote communities while simultaneously reducing the amount of plastic bottles that end up in landfill,” he said.

Zero Mass Water’s founder and Chief Executive Officer Cody Friesen said: “We are thrilled to partner with ARENA and demonstrate our SOURCE hydropanel technology in Australia.

“SOURCE hydropanels provide a renewable, infrastructure-free water solution to the driest inhabited continent on earth.”

Building, plant and process engineers responsible for managing large HVAC and other process cooling equipment systems will find the ST75 Series air/gas flow meter from Fluid Components International (FCI) provides precise direct mass flow measurement for good accuracy, repeatability and dependability.

The energy efficiency of HVAC and other process cooling equipment systems in large commercial buildings, manufacturing plants and industrial processes relies on precision air flow metering.  The ST75 Series air/gas flow meter features an advanced solid-state thermal dispersion mass flow sensing element for years of accurate, trouble-free service measuring air flow in chiller systems and duct work.

The ST75 flow meter operates over a wide air flow range that also includes mixed gas environments from 0.07 to 950 NCMH, depending on line size. For variable demand cycles due to weather or production requirements, the ST75 meter is factory preset to 100:1 turndowns.

With built-in process temperature compensation for accuracy, the precision ST75 flow meter maintains consistent performance in high temperature climates and rugged plant environments.  It features highly dependable accuracy to ±1 per cent of reading with ±0.5 per cent repeatability in line sizes from 6 to 51 mm.

The ST75 flow meter’s precision flow element has a no-moving parts design, which employs platinum RTD sensors embedded in equal mass thermowells with its microprocessor electronics calibrated to laboratory standards for air and a wide variety of other gases.  This no-moving parts design provides extra reliability where process safety is a concern.

Suitable for crowded equipment areas in HVAC mechanical rooms or on the factory floor, the compact ST75 model comes in a choice of either inline or insertion mounting configurations and features remote mounting capabilities for hazardous plant environments.  The model ST75AV features a built-in Vortab flow conditioner where lack of pipe straight-run is a potential issue. The transmitter, which includes a full digital display, can be mounted up to 15 meters away from its thermal mass flow sensor in piping or ductwork and connected via two 0.50-inch FNPT or M conduit connections.

The ST75 flow meter’s fully scalable dual 4-20mA standard outputs are user assignable to flow rate and/or temperature and a 0-1kHz pulse output of total flow.  The instrument can be ordered for input power with either 18 to 36 Vdc or 85 to 265 Vac, with or without a built-in LCD digital display.

The durable ST75 flow meter withstands process temperatures from -18 to 121°C.  It operates at pressures up to 16.5 bar (g) with a standard t-fitting (NPT female) process connection.   With a tube process connection, the meter withstands 41 bar (g).

Offering direct-flow measurement for higher performance at a lower cost with proven thermal dispersion technology, the ST75 flow meter eliminates the need for additional pressure and temperature sensors, flow computers, or other devices that are required with orifice plates, Venturis, Vortex shedding, and other volumetric meters.  The ST75 meter also requires virtually no maintenance for both a low installed cost and low life-cycle cost.

The ST75 Series electronics are housed in rugged, IP67 rated enclosure with dual conduit ports in either NPT or M20 threading. The models ST75A and ST75AV include HART as well as NAMUR compliant 4-20 mA outputs and SIL compliance rating. The  instrument carries global Ex agency approvals for Division l/Zone 1 installations.
