Circuit Protection for IoT Wearable Devices

US-based Mouser Electronics now stocks circuit protection components from Littelfuse specifically designed for use in Internet of Things (IoT) and wearable applications.

As demand grows for wearable devices that provide anything from fitness tracking to communications, the circuits in these devices will require electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection.

Littelfuse circuit protection components provide ESD protection for a variety of circuits found in both the simplest and most robust wearable devices.

Littelfuse offers general-purpose TVS diode arrays in wearables-sized footprints — including 01005, the industry’s smallest ESD footprint. For high radio frequency (RF) circuits, the SP3022 is available with a low capacitance of 0.35pF and in 0201 and 0402 packages.

As an alternative technology, polymer-based ESD suppressors can be used for protection where minimal impact on signal/data rates is required. For example, for high-speed USB 3.1 communication, XGD Series XTREME-GUARD ESD suppressors are available in 0603 and 0402 packages with a capacitance of 0.09pF or less.

Since batteries are the essential power sources of any wearable device, the charging process must be adequately controlled and protected against over-current effects.

The Littelfuse Lo Rho series of resettable polymer positive temperature coefficient (PPTC) devices provide reliable over-current protection for the battery when it is being charged, helping to ensure a safe charge and preserve the life of the battery.
