Cement wastewater discharge results in fine

BEECHWORTH Concrete has been fined almost $6000 by EPA Victoria after discharging wastewater and sludge to a stormwater drain.

The concrete batching plant was the subject of a community report in July 2010 regarding wastewater flowing into a stormwater culvert out the front of its premises.

The wastewater, which was consistent with cement sludge, was traced back to a poorly managed stormwater pit at the plant.

The company acknowledged a a failure to maintain the stormwater system.

The company took immediate steps to cap the stormwater discharge and clean up the waste in the stormwater drain. They have also put in place management procedures to prevent a reoccurrence of the incident.
