A new report from CSIRO’s Energy Transformed Flagship and the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation explains how plant matter which is currently wasted can be easily harnessed to make fuels at an equivalent cost of oil at $US40-60 a barrel.
The report discusses ‘second generation biofuels’ and it opens up the possibility of biofuel factories operating across regional Australia.
Two different types of biofuel factories can convert waste leaves, twigs, bark and other non-food crops into biofuels from local materials and cut disposal costs.
The technology also allows non-food sources to be grown on otherwise underutilised land.
