ABB strengthens grid reliability for one of the largest isolated electricity networks in the world

ABB has been awarded a contract for the supply and service of distribution transformers by Western Power.

The five year period contract will see ABB’s manufacturing facility in Perth, continue to produce and service distribution transformers for installation across a vast and growing power network, located in the south-west of Western Australia.

The contract scope includes the design, engineering, supply and service of 10kVA to 1000kVA up to 33kV rated distribution transformers.

ABB Australia’s purpose-built transformer manufacturing facility located in the Perth metropolitan area of Malaga will design and produce approximately ninety percent of the transformers.

With factories in ABB’s regional network in Singapore, Hefei and Hanoi to provide manufacturing capacity support should the Malaga facility be unable to satisfy local volume-demand requirements.

“The key to securing this contract was our understanding of Western Power’s transformer technology requirements developed through our longstanding relationship and proven ability to meet their needs in the most cost effective manner,” said Axel Kuhr, country manager for ABB in Australia.

“ABB’s transformers will help strengthen the reliability of the electricity network and support the company as it strives to satisfy the growing demand for electricity in Western Australia.”

Western Power is a state government owned corporation that builds, maintains and operates one of the largest isolated electricity networks in the world, supplying power to more than one million customers every day.

Transformers are integral components of any electrical grid and are a critical element in the efficient and safe conversion of energy across diverse voltage systems.
